Docs/Growth/Segments

Segments

Build saved, rule-based audiences from contact fields and activity history.

What a segment is

A segment is a saved audience of contacts defined by rules, for example everyone in a city who opened an email in the last 30 days. Oris Work keeps the member list up to date for you and remembers when each person entered. Segments are what Growth Journeys listen to: a journey can start when someone enters, or leaves, a segment.

Who can use it

Anyone with Growth read access can see the list of segments and their counts. Creating, editing, deleting, previewing and recomputing segments needs the manage permission, which by default only admins have. Opening a segment to see the named members needs read access to Growth people. Find it under Marketing, Growth Segments.

Create a segment

  • Click '+ New segment'.
  • Enter a Name. Optionally add a Description.
  • Choose how often it refreshes in 'Recompute': Daily, Hourly or Near-real-time.
  • Under 'Match everyone who meets ALL of', build the rules. Each row is either a 'Field' (a contact or company field, an operator and a value) or 'Did an event' (an event type, 'at least / exactly / more than...' a number of times in the last N days).
  • Click '+ Add condition' for another row. Use '+ Add "match any" group' for a block where any one row is enough, or '+ Add exclude group' to leave out anyone who matches any row in the block.
  • Watch the live line 'Matches N people right now' as you build. Fix any error shown there before saving.
  • Click 'Save segment'.

Fields and events you can use

Fields cover the contact (first and last name, email, phone, job title, city, currency, active) and its company (name, entity type, industry, group, employees, city, state, country). Operators depend on the field: text fields support 'is', 'is not', 'contains', 'is any of', 'is none of', 'is empty' and 'is not empty'; number fields add comparisons such as greater than. For 'is any of' type values separated by commas. Events include page views, form submits, email delivered, opened, clicked, bounced and unsubscribed, WhatsApp inbound and outbound, meetings booked, held and missed, referrals, sign-ups and paid orders.

Limits

  • A segment can have up to 20 conditions in total and groups can be nested up to 4 levels deep.
  • 'Is any of' and 'is none of' accept at most 20 values.
  • If a rule is too big or too deep you will see an error when previewing or saving.

Manage segments

  • Each segment card shows its member count, refresh setting and when it was last computed.
  • Click the segment name to expand the member list (Name, Email, Entered). Click a name to open that person's growth timeline.
  • 'Recompute' refreshes the members right now instead of waiting for the schedule.
  • 'Delete' removes the segment and its membership history after you confirm.

Good to know

  • Segments are not an audience picker for Marketing, Campaigns. The Campaigns page does not use them (see Campaigns basics).
  • A brand-new segment shows 'not yet computed' until its first refresh. Use Recompute to fill it immediately.
  • Sending anything to a segment is a separate step. Outbound messages from Growth go through the Growth Outbound approval queue and respect each person's consent.
